Prairie Wrestling Reception Celebrates Prairie Girls State Wrestlers
Prairie sent two wrestlers to the girls state meet in Coralville on January 22 and 23rd. Senior Anna Lantz and freshman Mackenzie Childers are the first Prairie wrestlers to represent Prairie High School at the Iowa Girls State Wrestling Meet. Mackenzie went on to make school history by medaling at the tournament with a 4th place finish at 125 in a very tough bracket.
The Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union (IGHSAU) also used the excitement of the tournament to announce that girls wrestling would now be considered a sanctioned sport beginning with the 2022-23 school year. This announcement comes 1 month shy of the 50th anniversary of Title IX which began an historic set of improvements for females in education and athletics. “It is fitting that on the fifty year anniversary of the beginning of this change we stand here celebrating two pioneers for Prairie; Mackenzie and Anna” said Rocky Bennett, Activities Director, “when you tell them congratulations today, please also tell them ‘thank you!’ because they’ve shown it can be done and we are fully committed to make sure it continues to be done at Prairie.”
The reception, held in the High School Commons on Tuesday, January 25th, was well attended by the Prairie Wrestling athletes, coaches, band members, cheerleaders, parents and community members.
Congrats Anna and Mackenzie! #weareprairie
