Driver Education

Prairie High School partners with Kirkwood Community College to provide Driver Education. – A waiver or reduction of fees may be available if you have been approved for free or reduced meals and have requested a waiver of fees.

After the application is complete, Kirkwood will contact the family to register the student in a session based on their interest.

This program is state mandated for any persons under the age of 18 who wish to drive a personal vehicle. It is 30 hours of classroom work and six hours of driving.

Besides the six hours of driving given by drivers education, the state of Iowa mandates that the students have a minimum of 14 hours with parent or guardian, two hours of which must be night time driving after sundown.

Students must be at least 14 years of age and have a valid Iowa Learners Permit.
